design objects4x4x18 Polystyrene Form
fall 2011 (CNC design technology course)
The purpose was to remove 50 percent of a given 4” x 4” x 18” stock using a CNC milling operation. Using 6 separate contour milling operations designed in Mastercam, the object is a 2” diameter spiral shape resembling the form of a threaded rod.

Because the operations of a 3-axis mill will require the helix to be divided into 4 quadrants, the order in which the quadrants are milled is shuffled, giving the object a unique, non-continuous spiral aesthetic.

A 3/4” diameter V-shaped bit is used for the milling. A 1/2” diameter flat end mill is used to clean up the corners, and the chop saw is used to remove excess material from the two ends.
