West Loop Market / 1 / 2 / next
fall 2005 (school design project)
The building is part of a group masterplan that includes a superblock with four new buildings bookending a landscaped boulevard scheme along Madison and Monroe Street in downtown Chicago. The courtyard created by the market creates an exterior plaza for public events to take place on this superblock.

Open stalls designated for local farmers during market hours are positioned on the lower street level. A full-time food court and restaurant are enclosed in conditioned spaces above keeping the building active beyond the market's temporary hours. The stalls are designed for flexibility and can be adjusted according to the needs of their user. The transparency of the building on both floors is used to activate the street level through the visibility of the activity taking place within. Click the images below to enlarge.
